Fantasy (n):
The faculty or activity of imagining things, especially things that are impossible or improbable.

Fantasy Fiction:
A popular genre that involves fantasy universes, world building, myths, magic, and other-worldly creatures. Typically the story will follow the protagonist as they progress through the main quest.

Sub-genres of Fantasy:

Children’s Fantasy: children’s literature with fantasy elements.

Comic Fantasy: focuses on humor and comedic tone in fantasy.

Fairy Tale Retellings: fairy tales retold with the same structure, different elements.

Fantasy Romance: focuses on relationships (social, political, romantic) in fantasy.

Gothic Fantasy/Dark Fantasy: incorporates darker or frightening themes in fantasy.

Grimdark Fantasy: incorporates a dystopian, amoral or violent tone in fantasy.

High Fantasy/Epic Fantasy: focuses on the epic nature of a fictional world in fantasy.

Historical Fantasy: represents fictitious versions of an era.

Low Fantasy: where magical events intrude a normal, non-fictitious world.

Medieval Fantasy: similar to historical fantasy, with an emphasis on the Middle Ages.

Portal Fantasy: in which a gateway or a portal transports us to a fantasy world.

Science Fantasy: science fiction or technology meets fantasy.

Heroic Fantasy: emphasis on a magical world where modern technology is non-existent.

New Weird: a spin on traditional fantasy stereotypes staring in the early 2000’s.

Urban Fantasy/Contemporary Fantasy: incorporates fantasy in an urban or modern world.

Young Adult Fantasy: teen and young adult literature with fantasy elements.

  1. Hey Natalie! Wow there are so many sub-genres. I honestly had no idea. After reading all of them I saw the title generator and got super curious! Your title was super cool so I had some pretty high expectations haha. Mine was "The Daughter of Frog and Ash".....I am not sure how I feel about the frog part....but maybe it could be a cool story. Anyways, well done!

  2. Hi Natalie! I am shocked at the amount of sub-genres of fantasy that exist. I love fantasy and think that it is one of the most creative and unique genres out there. You never know what can happen! Also, your title was super interesting... It would be super cool if you wrote a story with that as your title! Now, I am interested to see what my title would be. Thanks for sharing!
